In a standard assertiveness training, it is mainly about daring to stand up for yourself. Of course that’s important. It is also important to realize that it also entails pitfalls. When someone has found the motivation to finally say what it means, this often comes across as very surprising to people who are not used to that from this person. In many situations it also comes across as forced. When the other person starts a discussion, or starts asking questions about why you are suddenly saying this, they may immediately fall back into ‘silence mode’. An assertiveness training, where it is only about standing up for yourself, usually gives dubious results. The solution is to think from a broader communication vision, to learn skills based on the right insights, and how to make speak up about almost everything to almost everyone. The main thing is that you are able to speak up in difficult situations, in a way that creates an open dialogue and does not put pressure on the relationship. From Assertiveness Training to Crucial Conversations
Standing up for yourself is especially stressful when you feel the emotions rising. This happens in situations where there is a lot at stake and opinions differ. In these specific situations we speak of a crucial conversation. The two-day training Crucial Conversations, for mastering dialogue has more depth than a standard assertiveness training. This provides a better, structural solution for standing up for yourself, in which you, as an equal discussion partner, discuss the situation in an open dialogue and share mutual ideas. To achieve this you learn to apply a practical model, with 9 skills. Some are self-focused, such as breaking free, thinking about what you really want to achieve, controlling emotions, breaking down prejudice, and separating stories from facts. The other skills are focused on your interaction with the other, such as telling your story and creating a safe conversation environment (psychological safety). Issues such as respect and trust are also part of the program. Crucial Conversations is a powerful concept that goes beyond assertiveness training.
